Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services Program for Children and Their Families

Florida

One Community Partnership—Working Together For Our Children

One Community Partnership is a county-wide initiative to evaluate and redesign the existing array of children’s mental health services in Broward County, Florida.  OCP proposes to formalize and sustain an infrastructure that supports on-going collaboration among local stakeholders by addressing long-standing systemic issues, service gaps, and barriers that have historically prevented this community from maintaining SED children within the community environment.  The governing body is comprised of local stakeholders, including representatives of the local community.  The overall grant project focuses on:

  1. Providing parents with technical assistance to enhance parent/family advocacy skills and create an independent family-run organization,

  2. Developing a comprehensive, integrated, non-duplicative, and strengths-based single “front door” allowing access to the “system of care” through behavioral health providers, primary healthcare providers, child welfare case workers, juvenile justice case workers and school board staff by implementing a single electronic data sharing mechanism across systems,

  3. Developing a research-based model of intensive wraparound services to prevent residential placement; develop a drop-in center for older teens, enhance out-of-school child care and respite services to support local SED families,

  4. Using data obtained from national evaluation and local evaluation activities to develop a system-wide continuous quality improvement initiative,

  5. Assuring culturally competent service delivery by developing system-wide service delivery standards and training curriculum,

  6. Utilizing social marketing strategies to promote and advertise local children’s mental health system of care and to better facilitate coordination linkage between children’s mental health and other child serving partners (child welfare, juvenile justice, primary health care and the school system).
